Three

Once again, J.T. wound me around, over, and through so many towns and back roads that there was no way I could possibly get to the club on my own. The façade was as plain Jane as they come; just a large, dark building without any notable features and nary a car in the parking lot.

“Well, this looks like it’s gonna be loads of fun,” I said sarcastically.

“Would you hold your horses, impatient one?” J.T. steered the car down a narrow little path lined on both sides by a jungle of enormous bamboo. All of a sudden, it was as though we’d entered some fantasy land. A gigantic pair of neon lips, rapidly flashing to look as though they were kissing the air, hung from a massive overhead sign. We crossed through the bars of the sign to find a parking lot so jam-packed with cars that we could barely squeeze into a spot. J.T. popped the trunk and rapidly dressed in the most well-fitting, tailored outfit I’d ever seen on a man. He placed a slick fedora on the top of his head and held his elbow out to me. “Before we go in, I think I should warn you that this is not a typical club. It’s a bit more…”

I stopped in my tracks and squinted at him. “A bit more what? Whatever it is, maybe you should just surprise me?”

“You said you wanted big fun and that you liked shows, so this place is the first that came to mind. But, the main party doesn’t get started until late, so that’s why we went to all of those other places…”

“Why are you rambling? Let’s go! I’m ready to get in there!”

Club music thundered from the building and the men walking in and out of the parking lot generated a palpable buzz of high energy. I started dancing right there.

“Just remember that I warned you.”

“Yes! Okay! I remember!” I said, practically dragging him to the door. Two beefy men, whose only interaction with others most likely entailed smashing body parts, stood guard at the entrance. They gave us a quick onceover then nodded us in.

“Oh, my word!” I yelled over the pounding bass. The club was beyond amazing! It was richly decorated to be reminiscent of Hollywood’s days of yore. High-backed, circular, red velvet booths lined each wall of the building and extravagant crystal chandeliers hung throughout the building. The one modern feature was a huge dance floor fitted with pressure panels that lit up different colors with each step. A gargantuan stage with a huge, black velvet curtain was just beyond the mass of partiers.

“What do you want to drink?” J.T. yelled over the booming music.

“Something big, cold, and full of alcohol. I lost my buzz after the scuffle with Russ’s mom.”

“You got it. Find you on the dance floor?” he questioned.

“You know it!”

Even though the floor was packed, it didn’t stop me from wedging my body in between the crowd of men. The group around me was quite welcoming as they gyrated their bodies around mine.
